Small Claims Court procedure was introduced to Sri Lanka by the act No. 33 of 2022 which is a recently drafted piece of legislature. The intention behind establishing this small claims court was to expedite the resolution of smaller-scale disputes(which are beyond the threshold of Rs. 1.5 million as prescribed by the said act), aiming to deliver decisions within a maximum of 18 months from the initiation of proceedings. This was anticipated to reduce delays and alleviate the strain on the current legal system.
Additionally, the new court possesses the capability to convene the conflicting parties for a conference even after the case has been filed. This allows for attempts at settling through negotiation, potentially avoiding the need to proceed to a full trial.
